Asking families to be a reference for you

As a babysitter, having positive references from families you have worked with can be crucial to securing new jobs. However, it can feel intimidating to ask families to be a reference for you, especially if you’re looking to apply for several jobs. Luckily, at Helpr, babysitters only screen once for access to jobs on an ongoing basis!

Here are some tips on how to ask families to be a reference for your babysitting services:

  • Timing is key

    • The best time to ask a family to be a reference for you is after you have completed several successful babysitting jobs for them. This way, they will have a clear idea of your strengths as a caregiver. They will also be more likely to provide a positive reference.

  • Be direct and professional

    • When you are ready to ask a family to be a reference for you, be clear about what you are asking for and why.

    • Here’s an example of what to say, "I've really enjoyed working with your family, and I was wondering if you would be willing to serve as a reference for me in future babysitting jobs. I am applying to work with this babysitting app and would greatly appreciate your support."

  • Provide details

    • Make sure to give families all the information they need to provide an effective reference.

    • This might include your name, contact information, a summary of the types or details of the jobs you are seeking, as well as how they will be potentially contacted and/or ask how they prefer to be contacted (by phone call, email, etc.)

  • Thank them for their time

    • Whether or not the family agrees to serve as a reference, make sure to thank them for their time and support.

    • A positive and gracious attitude can go a long way in building professional relationships and securing future jobs!

By following these tips, you can feel confident in asking families to serve as references for your babysitting services.
